What Are Friends For?

Between the bitter cold weather and being sick with a cold myself, I've had to take naps and entertain myself indoors for the last five days. One of the projects I've been working on is to sort photos from my two weeks in England last fall, which has resulted in wondering, well, what some of them are.

This lot is from an old area in a London Underground station.

Groan!

While there is always maintenance going on in the Tube, it seemed like this year escalators everywhere were being serviced or replaced and stairs were compulsory.

But how could I begrudge 84 more steps when I would have missed this beauty entirely had I had the option of the escalator!

Alas, I had no photo of the outside of the station and couldn't find the scrap of paper where I had written down WHAT station it was. I tried Google. No help. Then I thought of my London friend Marie and within a few minutes, from just these photos, I had the answer! Marie is brilliant about all things London and you can click here for the answer and a photo of the entrance to the station.

So now I have a question (or six) for more of my brilliant readers.

Every day I walked past this lovely old car parked in the street a block from the house where I stayed in South Ealing. No one was ever around it to chat about it with and it intrigued me. Was someone planning to restore it? What is it and how old is it? Does it run? Where did it come from? Can I sit in the driver's seat?

So, Dear Reader, do you know anything about this car?

**********

Back here in Minne-snow-ta, we're being promised a week long warm-up, starting today! The temps are already above zero F this morning, I'm getting my energy back, and I'm planning to get outside. (Oh, and P.S. I figured out my new slide converter as well!)

  1. Can't wait for the answers about the car. Hope that you get well soon. I was clobbered on Dec 23, missed both Christmas and New Years (at the time, hoping I would die!), and have felt normal for just the last few days. Still coughing. Anxious for the warm-up, Minnesota has been hit really hard with some ugly virus illnesses.

  2. I'm glad you can look forward to a few warmer days. We are on our third day of rain, actually ice this morning. I sure like that old car and hope someone knows something about it. Hope you feel better soon.

  3. Well, I'd hoped that someone would have identified it by now, but we may not know if someone does...might be a foreign only car? Loved your pictures and commentary, Cynthia. Hope it warms up for you. We have even been unseasonably cold in Texas, and I have now been caught with a sinus infection...hopefully not going into the flu.

  4. We were in London in August and I do remember the steps, don't mind the downs too much, but I'm not sure how many ups I have left in me.

  5. That is a way cool car! I am looking forward to the warm up:)

  6. You certainly set me some challenges! The car is a Standard 10 car dating back to 1934. It is without its wings and running board but it must still be working otherwise it would not be parked on a road. I am surprised it wasn't in a garage.

    1. Once again, thanks Marie! I had never heard of the Standard brand of cars. I found some interesting facts once I knew what it was, which I'll put up tomorrow.

  7. So glad it's warming up for you. Here it is probably a bit colder as the sun came out yesterday. When we have no rain it gets colder. It is a big job to organize photos. I don't really try any more as I take far too many. I mostly just delete ones that didn't turn out, lol.Enjoy the rest of your week.

  8. Well Fun60 I believe has "nailed" it for you. Must be a very "neighbourhood watch" and aware area of London, plus "feral free"!!!!
God Almighty - there is hope for us yet! That car parked o/night I believe here in most areas of Brisbane would be vandalised.
It would have to be under lock and key to have an icicle's hope in hell of surviving and I dread to think what would become of
it if left as it is overnight in the USA!

Now that street in South Ealing can bow - must be one of the best residential and safest places on this planet.

Good to know that the snow and cold in "Minnea-freezeville" is abating, if only "Bris-saunaville" could lose the "sauna part!!!

    Cheers

    1. Ooops! Should be " South Ealing can TAKE a bow".
Must have been the shock of seeing a vintage car in a suburban street
being in one piece where it is parked overnight etc.!!

    2. Colin you make Australia sound a place full of vandals. Its not that bad. That car could be parked in our street without being vandalised.

    3. I am glad to hear that, Diane. I was getting a frightening picture of Australia. Too many people have that same view of the U.S. (I think from the news media that makes it money from "bad" news). You could safely park it on the road where I live, too, but you would have lots of people stopping to ask my questions!

  9. Cynthia the photo outside the station is betterr than inside. The vintage car is charming. We are lucky in Europe because we have spring here no winter. i believe it is going to stay with us.

  10. 84 steps! A good thing you're going down. We went above 0 c today. We get a week of this mild weather. I'm not so lucky with the scanner I have. I know how to run it but the quality is very poor.

  11. Those stations are sometimes really old in London but with beautiful details. I stayed a few years ago in Ealing South too in an old house there. We had hired one floor from an eldery couple with our two kids and explored London from there for two weeks.

  12. Do hope you are alright.
A mystery regarding the car. Interesting to note it's permitted to stay stationary without being registered on a public street.

    1. Seems it is registered by plates on the back which i ommited to see at first glance.

    2. Margaret!!!!

Tut Tut - shame on you. As a "true blue" you should have been more observant!
Maybe you had a Jacqui Lambie "moment", - never mind anyhow, you redeemed
the observation powers of the Aussies.I have to admit I thought the same from the first photo.

  13. I was going to suggest that you ask Marie as I am following her London Underground above ground posts, but I see you already did. She is so good with London facts. Glad to hear that it is warming a little. Good time for photo sorting.

  14. I love the front of that old car! And doesn't the painted railing make the metal blue one look so much better? Sorry to hear that you were sick

  15. No. But it's very similar to an old 1947 Morris 8 that my brother had. Love the tube shots.

  16. Gosh! You had such an interesting trip to England. I have no idea about the car. I'm very bad at them.
