What? Really?

Could it be true?

I got an email yesterday saying there were local strawberries at the farmer's market. I was pretty sure it was an error, but what if it was true?

It's been the strangest winter here with record temps and things blooming that shouldn't be blooming,

so just maybe? We had to go see.

We found a parking place and entered with high hopes.

Lots of nice green things, all local and fresh.

Pretty exciting for a Minnesotan to see in the dead of winter.

Bread Man is here.

His loaves are amazing, baked in a wood-fired oven, so crusty and chewy.

Bags of beautiful buttery pecans.

And then, there they were!

Homegrown strawberries! The sweetest, strawberryest strawberries you ever tasted.

In January!

Once we found the strawberries we returned for a loaf of bread and some pretty red kale to make kale potato soup later in the week.

We rinsed the berries and ate a handful each. We had some more for breakfast with yogurt this morning.

Yup, all gone now

but the sweet memory

of fresh strawberries in January.

  2. Yes it is strange isn't it, we saw narcisses along the road blooming. Strawberries I saw before Christmas on the market here, don't know where they came from.

  6. A very impressive open food market. All seems very organised from the
photos. I'd be going for that Fresh bread stall - the strawberries
    would have to wait.
I "think"??? strawberries are available here in Australia all year around.
Some times they are more expensive in their plastic containers.
I don't buy them. I can take or leave them, but strawberry cheese cake,
well don't get between me and one of those, you might be trampled to death
    in the rush.
    Cheers

PS: Still this mild summer weather here in Brisbane - oh I am enjoying it.

Watching - yep it is the Australian Open season and the World tennis stars
    are here en-masse.

  10. I wonder if that means there will be no strawberries this spring, when they normally come in. I have things blooming in the yard like the flowering quince, some Iris, and a button bush. I'm sure they can't bloom again in early spring. Those strawberries do look delicious!

  15. That's pretty amazing. You are lucky to have such a nice local market we have to travel a fair way to get to a decent market.

  16. Your market looks lovely, and what I really like is how little plastic packaging there appears to be. A group of us are working on our local market sellers to get them to stop putting lots of their produce in plastic packaging. You wouldn't think it would be that difficult, but it is. The bread stall looks inviting. And anytime is a good time for strawberries if they are grown locally.
