Mushroom Log

I've been coveting a mushroom log for years, but it sounded so complicated.  A watering/not watering schedule.  An even temperature of 60 degrees or something, impossible where I live.  But when Mushroom Guy appeared at the farmers' market with birch logs innoculated with mushroom spores, I was a goner!

Then the log just sat there in the garden for a year, and I gave up hope.  There was $12 ill-spent....

Imagine my glee when the snow left after our terrible, cold winter, spring arrived . . .

and I noticed the log was sprouting mushrooms!

Even at $4 each, these tasted lovely.
They aren't much less expensive at Mushroom Guy's market stand.

  1. Hopefully that's the first of many mushrooms - that will bring the price per mushroom down. Your brunch looks yummy.

  3. Now this is a fun post! I must admit to being nervous about deciding I know which mushrooms are edible. We had too many in our yard when I was a kid and they were definitely not something one wanted for brunch! Very interesting!

  8. Dear Cynthia, I've never heard of a mushroom log. Isn't that the wonder of blogging!!! We learn so much from the lives and wisdom of others. Peace.

  10. Oh my, how wonderful!... congratulations Cynthia, your patience paid off :) The birch log alone is beautiful, but now it boasts a harvest. I would love one of those - mushrooms are one of my husband's favorites. Bon Appétit!

  11. Well there you go Cynthia! nature stepped ahead and viola beautiful shitake mushrooms. While on holidays in Italy recently I had white truffles for the first time ever .... Delicious! wouldn't it be nice if there was a truffle log.
