My Heart's in the Highlands

I think part of my heart will always be in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina where The Writer and I built our first home many years ago. These are photos of the trip we took a couple weeks ago on my birthday.

Hwy 64 between Highlands and Cashiers
Whiteside Cove, Horse Cove Road with 37 curves and switchbacks
Dry Falls, a 75 foot waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest.
You can walk behind it and remain dry.  Sort of.
Picnic lunch on the rocks by the road, Sugarfork.

Mountain Rest, North Carolina.  Isn't that a perfect name?
Little Sliding Rock, a 10 foot drop on slippery rocks on the Chattooga River.
I was so tempted to slide down it until I stuck one foot in the water and it became numb!

What it would have looked like sliding down ....

I have some happy news to report today.
After 10 weeks my mom is finally out of the care center and at home!
My sister is there with her as she can't be alone yet and we will be going down to see her in a few days.

  2. Wonderful country. There's a waterfall you can walk behind where I used to go in Wales. You can stay perfectly dry as long as the wind's not blowing (which it always is!).

  3. Just as well you didn't slide down the waterfall slippery dip,
you may have ended up with a very sore arse!

    Great news about your Mum.
    Cheers

  10. Oh, to me, there is no more beautiful place than in those mountains. Poppy and I have always dreamed about moving there. You take the most beautiful pictures! So glad to hear that your mother is well enough to go home. That is wonderful news! I enjoyed your last post on "cotton". Cotton sure is pretty growing in the fields.

  11. That's really beautiful; you almost SMELL it, the air, the soil, the water. Belated many happy returns - it was my birthday a couple of weeks ago too; us Librans need to stick together. Glad your mum is well - parents, eh?!
