Minnesota Farms in Late Winter

'"I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape --

the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter.

Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show."

~Andrew Wyeth, American painter

  1. I love old rustic buildings. The photo with the red containers and pine trees could almost make a Christmas card.

  2. Like the Wyeth quotation, he described it perfectly.

  3. Loved the quotation. There is nothing like a rustic building and a bit of snow to make you want to live the dream, a smallholding in a rural area. The photos are beautiful.

  7. Cynthia, lookind at your Americans farm I am sure I definitely wouldn't like to live and run a farm. Leading this lifestyle is not so easy but I know some people love it. Is it typical for Americans to put a flag ? At my place is not popular at private properties.

    1. People do sometimes have a flag at their home or farm. I think it is most common with people who served in the military. This one stood out because it's so nice and the farm itself is so tattered and battered.

  8. Great winter photos of the farm. I wonder it they will catch up on all the things that need doing when spring comes?

  9. That is a brilliant quote by Andrew Wyeth. He seems to have understood deeply the power and possibilities of the seen and unseen worlds.

  10. Paradise Acres?????
I'm pretty sure that the cattle as shown in those snowy feed lots would have
a less attractive name for their present residence - "Brrrrrrrrrrrrr Acres"???

The flag looks a bit out of place on that run down storage or garage barn,
but the rest of the farm looks pretty good with decent looking shelters for the
cattle in blizzards, wind bursts and at night in the feed lot yards.

I'm pretty bloody sure that if this farmer wants to continue making some form of
income from his cattle etc., then come Spring it will be all bloody hands on deck
to fix broken sheds, fallen fences etc etc up!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is what REAL farmers do.
    Cheers

PS: Still no February 2015 here in Brisbane????????????????????
I'm loving it, even the now excessive bloody rain which the city no longer
needs - at least for a month to dry out somewhat.

  18. I used to work on a farm and occasionally I miss it. But not on freezing days like those you've shown here!

  19. This looks a rather remote place , must be tough in winter with the snow. Reminds me of "Little house on the prairie" series.

  21. It looks a long tough winter (again) weren't we saying that last year? I expect everyone is looking forward to the return to Paradise in the spring.
Our summer is rather average (but that's good!!) hopefully we don't have too cold a winter ahead ourselves...
    Have a happy weekend ahead.

  22. I love the farm photos and the quote. Sometimes I don't see the loneliness. Sometimes I see it as solitude needed between the long bursts of energy required to run a farm, and sometimes I see is as pure grit to make it through what nature throws at those farm structures. I think it reminds me of my ancestors.
