Easter was THE day for fashion when I was growing up in the 1950s.
The ladies and girls had new everything -- gloves, dresses, shoes, an Easter bonnet.
Ready for church on Easter morning. I was 2 1/2.
Also popular was the Easter corsage. My dad or my uncle or my grandpa bought the ladies one sometimes, usually an orchid. An orchid was a very delicate and exotic flower in those days.
My mom's was never as huge as Mamie Eisenhower's
but still, it was pretty special.
There are about 27,800 species of orchids,
twice the number of bird species and four times the number of mammal species in the world!
These beauties are blooming at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah for the Easter season.

Cynthia, that picture is so good! What a nice looking family! I grew up in the 50's too. We always got a new Easter outfit. Girl's Easter dresses were pretty back then...pink or blue or yellow Dotted Swiss with a big sash that tied in the back. I remember getting the little white gloves and a Gigi Perreau hat with a ribbon that hung down the back.

ReplyDeleteOh! How totally cool! We never had that Easter tradition here in Hawaii, but I can imagine what fun it must have been. I guess it must be orchid season around the world. It didn't even occur to me. You've really captured some gorgeous blooms.

ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you. we dressed up for all occasions in those years. as a little boy I always had suit. I haven't owned a suit since I was married in the 60's.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful post for Easter. I remember hearing about the days when women would get a new bonnet for Easter and of course there are some old movies featuring this. I like your vintage photos. The orchids are beautiful. Reading a book called, The Orchid Thief opened my eyes to so many things about this beautiful flower. Happy Easter to you ♥

ReplyDeleteOh boy, the Easter hats! I remember wearing one every year . . . atop braids and nerdy glasses. How attractive is that? The orchids must have been wonderful to see in person.
