Week 8, Day 1 - Beaches Reopen

Pawleys Island south beach was closed beginning last November for hurricane damage and repairs, then for Covid-19, until May.  Six long months.  So happy to have “our” beach open once again.  Boy, have we have missed it!

No problem keeping a proper social distance at 8 a.m. as we wandered among the tidal pools at the south tip, admiring the sounds and smells, shells and jelly fish, gulls and sandpipers, and exquisite art by Mother Nature.

Thanks to beach renourishment and replacement of the dunes, we can now walk four miles, from one end of the island to the other.

When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused.
-Rainer Maria Rilke

Nothing dims thoughts and fears of the troubles of the world, nothing soothes the soul,
like a walk on the beach.

  1. Lovely looking beach to walk along.
I've donated your book to the Vantage Point library, here, so others can enjoy reading your dad's letters.

  2. The contouring of the sand is very appealing indeed. I am happy for you, Cynthia, that you are able once again to visit this tranquil, delightful area, and to explore the life in the tide pools, smell the ocean, listen to the gulls. That it really what life is all about.

  3. You are so right about a walk on the beach soothing the soul. I think my husband really misses living close to the beach where he was raised in Florida in Lake Park. We would probably both move there if the grand children could go too. Can't leave them now. Some lovely captures of sand art made by the sea.

  6. That makes me long for the beaches of N Norfolk, which are very similar to the beach you have there. At the moment though I'm restricted to walks in the local area; a small price to pay compared to what some people are experiencing.

  7. Never a truer word said there is nothing like a walk on the beach and the sea to make you feel better. Take care and stay safe.

  11. Dear Cynthia, the photographs you took and shared really do show me how exquisite the art of the beach is. I've never before realized that tides and dunes and beach made such striking art. I've read a little of Rilke, but never met this quotation. For me, water has always been a wellspring of solace and introspection and peace. I've always lived inland and so not known the beach, but while growing up, I had the creek on our farm and I went there daily in all the seasons of the year except winter. That creek helped form me. Thanks for bringing back so many good memories of it with that Rilke quotation. Take care. Peace.
