Everyday Clothes

Remember when you had school clothes, church clothes, and everyday clothes you only wore on Saturdays and when you came home from school?  I haven't written for awhile, longer than usual, because we have mostly been wearing our everyday clothes.  No trips, no discoveries, no big weather, no celebrations.  Just everyday living.

We got a new chair for the living room, comfy and perfect for reading and keeping an eye on the neighborhood.  (If you can get there before Rosie does.  She doesn't always take kindly to sharing.)

The azaleas are in full bloom. This mound in the front yard is as tall as I am and at least 20 feet across.  There is another planting just as big, a pink one, to the right of it.

I prefer the plantings in the backyard that are more free form and untamed.  These purplish ones that I cut for the house have blossoms that are each four inches across!

My little garden is ready.  I was digging it by hand as usual when our neighbor appeared with his rototiller and finished it off.  The greens are still producing from last year and right along the fence the sugar pod peas have been planted.  Green bean seeds will be joining the party today.

Say hi to Slurp, a rather boring addition to our aquarium.  He only comes out in the darkest dark so we hardly ever see him, but I must say he lives up to his name and does a fine job of cleaning the algae off of everything.  I appreciate it because that used to be my job.

News from the beach:  The first cannonball jellyfish are in. The sand was littered with their still-pulsing bodies yesterday and they were all jumbo size, 12-16 inches across.  We also saw the first man in the surf with no wet suit.  A brave Canadian tourist, no doubt! (Sure enough, we spotted his car, license plate -- New Brunswick. We sure admire our Canadian visitors' constitutions.)

And now the news I know you have all been waiting for!  The church on Pawley's Island was back in its place over the marsh and looking great when the wedding party arrived last Saturday. I'm sure it was a beautiful wedding even if it did rain all day.

So, no big news here.   But that's okay . . .

  1. Sometimes it's good to do little of anything. As for every day clothes, it's kind of interesting how we change as we get older. When I was young I tried to be as fashionable as my meagre resources would allow - had to impress the girls after all - but now, if it's comfy and warm I could wear it every day! And as for colours coordinating, who gives a fig for that? Well my wife does actually. Every so often she will tell me, "You can't wear THAT with THAT." So, obedient fellow that I am, I don't!

  2. Funny you should write about clothes today. Just now there are several stacks of clothes on my bed as I decide what I will need for our river cruise on the Rhine next week. We leave Sunday and arrive Monday morning in Amsterdam. I just signed on to look again at the weather forecast for Amsterdam to decide what I will wear on the plane and most of Monday until I can shower and change for the first dinner.

But you're right. I only have every day and exercise clothes now. Our church is not a dress up place at all - most wear jeans. To go to the theatre or out to dinner - every day clothes. I have one dress hanging in my closet that I wore to a wedding last spring and its not that fancy. I wonder when I will wear it again.

  5. What beautiful Azaleas! So very good for my winter eyes! It is snowing here again, same as yesterday our snow is everyday. Sometimes nothing exciting is a good thing. You shelf behind the chair holds some interesting stuff. Those must be the Jellyfish that sting:(

  6. Sometimes you need a bit of "uneventful" in your life. I'm sure Slurp agrees!

  8. I think it is great that you are just having ordinary, every day lives. We all need more of them as it seems everyone is so busy. I do like your new chair and your azaleas. I wish I had a roto tiller for my small garden. I was just thinking about it the other day. I do remember wearing school clothes, church clothes and home clothes. I still do that to some extent but not nearly in the same way now that I'm retired.

  9. Had a school uniform as all school do down here.
What I wore after school I also wore to church on Sundays when a child/teenager as HE upstairs doesn't care what you wear, well I expect he doesn't :)
Like your new chair and it sounds as if it's in the correct place to see most things.

  11. When getting older the more you prefer the simple things, don't have to climb the mountains anymore :)

  14. Dear Cynthia, i enjoyed the simplicity of this posting and it helped me also. What I mean by that is that I am somewhat of a recluse because I no longer drive due to the effects of Glaucoma. I moved here nearly 9 years ago, and because I don't have a job or attend a church, I haven't made many friends. I've never married, so I have no children and grandchildren who come to visit. I don't mind living a solitary life because I'm such an introvert that it works for me. But it doesn't give me much to blog about. So I have to really search for topics. And your writing today about the new chair and the cat and the azaleas and the garden--all in one blog putting together your days, really has inspired me to do the same. Thank you. Peace.

  15. Everyday life makes good reading too. Got to love a neighbour who pops over with a rototiller! That looks like great soil, and with those fences to keep the pests out we should see some lovely veges in the future. Beautiful azaleas by the way. They don't do so well at our place.
