Varnville, South Carolina

An abandoned store and gas station served travelers on Gray's Highway between Augusta and Savannah. Like the attendant who once tilted back on a porch chair and watched the cars go by, now the old station itself seems to lean back quietly and watch the road.

It might have started its days as a store back when the nearest town was called Dixie.

Near the tiny town of Varnville, in its time it provided a living for the family in the house behind it.

Somewhere not very far from this spot, this photo was taken. Anyone recognize it?

(Photo from the Internet)

Yup, the home of Forest Gump!

Although the house was in Alabama in the movie, it was actually built near Varnville, SC and torn down after filming ended.

  2. Wonderful old place and, yes, it's got that air of having done all there is to do and being happy to take it easy.

  3. Boy have you been on the backroads. We lived in Augusta back in the 80's when Mac was stationed at Ft. Gordon.

  4. It's funny how places can be closed abandoned and left. I'm surprised that there isn't any vandalism.

  5. Very interesting tidbit about the movie. My city is always used for scenes that are supposed to be made in USA ;-)

  6. Look at those flowery shrubs back bay the old house!! Can you tell I live in MN? What an interesting spot in the road! Sees a bit wasteful to me to build a house for a movie and then tear it down, but I guess:(

  8. What a cute house with the petrol pumps. I don't remember the house from Forest Gump anymore, to long ago.
Glad to read your daughter liked Amsterdam, always nice to hear compliments about my birthplace!

  10. I like the chimney on the gas station! And the house behind it, with the yard, looks so inviting.

  14. You've got to hand it to the location scouts for Forest Gump. They must have gone far afield.
The old service station is downright homey, unlike the megaliths we all use now.
