Nightfall

When the new bridge into Beaufort was built, the old two-lane was left below it as a community fishing pier. It's a place for anyone to fish, an equal opportunity for anyone to be on the water, and people of all ages, all colors, all walks of life gather there in the evening.

Some, like us, are just out for a stroll, but most are tending to the business of catching supper.

Families cluster around coolers of food and drinks, wives ease into chairs with books, chldren tend their lines as seriously as adults. Everyone is friendly, hushed, polite.

The air cools, dusk settles, the sun's evening performance begins.

We usually find a picnic table halfway down the pier and sit and watch the show.

When the sun is gone, when the last boat nears the shore, we head for home,

enfolded in a benediction over another treasured day.

  2. What a great idea to leave the old bridge in place for people to enjoy. I've never understood why anyone would like fishing; it's just too degrading to be outwitted by a fish!

  3. Many old but safe bridges when replaced by a much larger bridge for the increasing traffic flow
are retained here for the same purpose and if it is SAFE for diving off, BUT if a sign says NO DIVING
then God help the divers if caught. Of course the 'diving off area" is not near the fishing fraternity.
That could lead to an all out confrontation - ha ha!
I guess you'd need more that "a benediction" to retain calm when / if diving and fishing were on
    in too close proximity.
    Cheers

  4. Good to see it being used instead of torn down. Sounds like a fun place to spend an evening. Cold and rainy here...it feels real damp and cold...enough to snow (
